Note: These instructions were written a while back for a T-Mobile G1 running Android 1.5... things have moved on a little since then and some of the information/screens here may not be 100% accurate. However, the overall requirements/flow are still more or less correct.
Installing the YouMail Visual Voicemail application is quick and easy.
Regular users should install the version of the application that is available on the Android Market.
You can download the application from here if you have difficulties with the Market or you want to take advantage of some of the newer/experimental features we're working on. Once a feature has been released here it will generally be made available on the market within a couple of weeks.
Important The installation program built into the phone will die if you rotate the phone while the install is in progress (i.e. between step 2/3a and step 6) - so... don't rotate the phone. Once you are in the signup part of the YouMail application you can rotate the screen, but be aware - any rotation of the phone between step 2/3a and when you use the back key to get back to the browser will cause an error (maybe 2). This is not a problem with the YouMail application. See the post http://forums.youmail.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=46 for detailed information.
1. Download the application from YouMail.
Use the standard Internet browser on your phone to go to:
http://www.youmail.com/androidbeta/youmail.apk
2. When the file has been downloaded just tap on it to start the installer.
3. Turn on "Unknown Sources" if necessary.
Since you are not downloading this file from the Android Market you may need to turn on the "Unknown Sources" option. Your phone will pop up a dialog if you need to do this. (If you've already installed other unknown apps you will already have this option enabled).
3a. Return to Downloads
If you had to enable "Unknown Sources" you'll need to go back into your browser and press "Menu" then select "More", and finally "Downloads" to get back to the download list.
Note: On Android 2.0 and later you should be able to just press the "Back" key to return to your download list.
4. When the installer pops up, tap "Install" to install the application.
5. Once the installation has completed, tap "Open" to start YouMail Visual Voicemail.
6. The very first time you run the application it will ask you for your phone number (which it auto-detects) and your YouMail PIN.
7. Enjoy
When the application starts up it will automatically download all of the "Message Headers" for messages in your inbox (the message header is everything except the audio). For any messages that are still new, the audio will be downloaded too.
If you have a lot of messages this could take a few minutes, during which things may go a little slow. (I speak from experience here... I had 1,000 messages in a folder and it took about 20 minutes before the phone came back to life). Once the messages have been downloaded the normal sync process will take over.
